Don't miss this great opportunity to hear details of the Governor's budget proposal and how it will impact California's schools. Experts from School Services will be on hand again to walk us through the budget proposal along with a variety of skill building sessions.

Returning this year will be the popular "PR Boot Camp" for those new to the field of School PR. (Everyone is welcome to join in!)

  • This year's event will be held at the Sacramento Marriott in Rancho Cordova to provide a location near the CalEMA facility that we'll tour on Thursday afternoon. Identify yourself as a CalSPRA attendee when making reservations to receive the special rate of just $84 plus tax for a single or double occupancy room. Suites are also available at the special rate of $249 plus tax.

Wednesday, Jan. 13

3 p.m. - PR Boot Camp - Join in this FREE two-hour session that will provide those who are new to the profession with a crash course in school public relations with time for experienced members to share current challenges and best practices. All CalSPRA members and their guests can attend at NO cost.

5:30 p.m. - Evening on your own or Sign Up Dinner Option

Thursday, Jan. 14

8 a.m. - Conference Registration, Breakfast & Networking

8:50 a.m. - Welcome by Trent Allen, CalSPRA President

9 a.m. - CDE Panel, coordinated by Tina Woo Jung, Information Officer, California Department of Education

A panel of key CDE staff members will present information on many areas of imprtance. Included among the topics are:

  • The impact of the changes in assessment systems
  • Race to the Top vs. NCLB
  • The effect on districts going into Program Improvement status
  • The changes in the Distinguished Schools recognition program

10:15 a.m. - BREAK

10:30 a.m. - Budget Presperctive, presented by Ron Bennett, President and CEO, School Services of California

Review of the 2008-09 and 2009-10 budget situation including the Governor's budge proposal along with tips on effectively communicating the complex topic of school finance.

12 p.m. - LUNCH (PROVIDED)

1:30 p.m. - Meet in lobby to to board bus

2 p.m. - Tour of CalEMA, Crisis Communication and Disaster Service Workers

Get an inside look on how the state of California prepares and responds to crsises ranging from fires and earthquakes to floods and terrorism. CalEMA's communication office will provide a guided tour and a session on crisis prepardness.

5 p.m. - Networking Reception @ Hotel

6:30 p.m. - Evening/Dinner on Your Own or Sign Up Dinners

Friday, Jan. 15

8:45 a.m. - Legal issues in Education, presented by Kronick, Moskovitch, Tiedmann and Geirard

A look at legal issues that have recently hit the court docket and other legal updates impacting California's schools.

9:45 a.m. - Break

10 a.m. - Media Perceptions and Ethics in Public Relations, presented by Betsy Hays, APR, Professor at CSU Fresno

Hays will present a look at how reporters in the media view the public relations inudstry and the professionals that power it.

11:30 a.m. - Break (Check out of hotel if needed)

12 p.m. - Closing Lunch & Table-Top Discussions

1 p.m. - Conclusion of Summit
